The history of the Trinity House Penzance Depot...

In 1861, land on the quay
of Penzance Harbour
was acquired by Trinity
to prepare the
granite to construct
the Wolf Rock lighthouse.
The lighthouse became
operation in 1870 & still
stands off the south coast of Lands End.

Workshops were later
                                    built on the site to
                                   create the existing
                                   Trinity House depot.
For the late 19th & most
                                   of the 20th century, it
                                   operated as a service
                                   & maintenance centre

for the lighthouses, lightships & maritime buoys around the coast of the South &
South West.

The Depot became
redundant with the
introduction of buoy
servicing on board
Trinity House vessels &
the automation of
lighthouses. Wolf Rock
lighthouse was the
first lighthouse
in the world to be fitted with a servicing helicopter landing pad.
In 1989 the buoy room
                                  of the depot was
                                  converted to house the
                                  Trinity House Collection
                                  & opened as The
                                  Lighthouse Centre
                                  Museum, before

closing in 2005. The
depot remained mostly empty for a

number of years until being rescued, restored & preserved by the current owner.
